Frank Lampard insists his decision to place his faith in Mason Mount was vindicated by the youngster’s performance during Sunday’s landmark win over Tottenham.
The England international, 20, has found the going increasingly difficult in recent weeks following an eye-catching start to the season.
Mount starred in an advanced role as Chelsea enjoyed perhaps the most significant win of Lampard’s tenure to date when they scored a 2-0 win over Jose Mourinho’s resurgent Spurs side.
Lampard reportedly has £150million to spend in January with Chelsea’s transfer ban having been lifted, but the 41-year-old indicated that displays like the one on Sunday are likely to convince him to maintain his faith in the club’s young players, in stark contrast to his predecessors.
‘I asked for a reaction after Bournemouth and they gave it,’ he said at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Boxing Day fixture against Southampton.
‘I thought Mason’s performance was a great example of why you should stick with them. Maybe managers didn’t stick with them.’
On the significance of beating Spurs on their own patch, he added: I think it was [a big result]. Going to Tottenham, in good form.
‘The character, the fight and strength and it makes it the best performance.
‘I hope it helps them. For the young ones, there is a bit of a mixture. Hopefully within the group the gives us confidence.’
