Alexis Sanchez’s spectacularly underwhelming Manchester United career prompted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to hold crunch talks with executive-chairman Ed Woodward over the club’s future transfer policy.
Jose Mourinho appeared to have pulled off a major coup when he beat local rivals Manchester City to the versatile forward’s services back in January 2018 after the Chile international decided to quit Arsenal.
The former Barcelona star, however, failed to settle in the north west and even admitted earlier this week that he asked his representatives if they could engineer an immediate return to north London after just his first training session under Mourinho.
‘I ended up signing without much information about what was happening in the move. The first days that I was with my colleagues, sometimes there are things that you do not realise until you arrive,’ he said.
‘The first training I had I realised many things. home and I told my representative: ‘Can’t the contract be terminated to return to Arsenal?’
Sanchez subsequently moved to Inter last summer having been deemed surplus to requirements by Solskjaer and is steadily rebuilding his tarnished reputation in Italy with Inter.
The 31-year-old has hardly been missed at all at Old Trafford with Solskjaer basing his rebuild around a clutch of exciting, committed and highly-focused young players.
According to ESPN, Sanchez’s dismal Red Devils career forced Solskjaer to confront Woodward and tell him to value team spirit and dressing room harmony over signing high-profile individuals.
United were only able to beat City to Sanchez’s signature in the first place after offering the player a staggering wage in the region of £500,00-a-week.
Sanchez’s salary was a sore point with several high-profile players and complicated the complex and lengthy contract negotiations with David de Gea and indirectly contributed to Ander Herrera’s decision to leave and join Paris Saint-Germain.
