Former Liverpool and Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso will take over the reins as Borussia Monchengladbach boss this summer.
It’s been confirmed that Marco Rose will depart Gladbach to become Borussia Dortmund manager at the end of the season and the Bundesliga outfit have been closing in on Alonso to replace the German.
Alonso, 39, hung up his boots in the summer of 2017 after an illustrious playing career spanning nearly two decades in which he represented Real Sociedad, Eibar, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
While completing his UEFA Elite coaching course, Alonso returned to Madrid to lead their Under-14 side before taking charge of Segunda Division B team Real Sociedad B in 2019.

According to German publication Bild, an agreement has been reached for the 2010 World Cup winner to become head coach in June.
Alonso’s Real Sociedad contract is due to expire this summer and the iconic ex-Spain international has been open with the club regarding his ambitions to manage in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Gladbach secured Champions League football with a fourth-placed finish last term but have had a disappointing season this time around and sit tenth in the table.
Sporting director Max Eberl recently told ZDF: ‘I’m looking for a new coach for the summer, so I’ve been on the road very, very intensively for the last three weeks.
‘I had very, very many and good conversations. I am on the right track, we had a selection of candidates that we have dealt with.
‘With the focus we are already on the home straight – we have a clear vision.’
More to follow.
