Gary Neville has defended his remarks about the performance of Manchester United’s front three against Sheffield United and says they must do more when the team are not playing well.
The former defender was on commentary duty for Sky Sports on Sunday and was scathing about Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James through the first 70 minutes of the match as the Blades held a comfortable two-goal lead.
‘The lack of movement from Martial, Rashford and James is a joke, it really is a joke,’ he exclaimed. ‘All game. Nothing at all from them.’
But a frantic 10-minute spell saw United take a 3-2 lead, with all three of that maligned trio playing a part in the comeback – though the hosts rallied to grab a deserved late equaliser.
Neville was criticised for going too over top with his comments, but he insists the forward line were well below par and needed to work harder off the ball.
‘The attack for 70 minutes were so poor,’ tweeted Neville in response to a fan who had criticised his remarks.
‘I watched it back again yesterday and they have to do a lot more than that.
‘Nowhere near enough penetrating runs or movements into pockets and you must contribute when the team is not playing well in other ways. But the last 20 [heart emoji].’
Speaking on Sunday, Neville had also said: ‘Manchester United’s midfield is poor but you expect better from that front three. If you asked Chris Wilder to swap McGoldrick and Mousset for Martial and Rashford, he would say no.’
Rashford has scored seven goals in 13 Premier League appearances this season, also laying on four assists, while Martial and James have both scored or assisted six goals each.
